Brains In Action

The Townsend-Warner History Prize is a glorious prep School tradition which annually attracts 900 entries. The first paper is a general trawl through historical knowledge and the 200 highest scorers are invited to attempt paper two which requires a range of in-depth understanding and
appreciation of events and their legacy...as well as good essay writing schools. Both Michael and Jamie Truell sat the second test with Jamie (still
two years young!) managing 189th and Michael, a most impressive 31st. Well done to them both and GOOD LUCK to Michael who will spend the first few days of next week attempting a Winchester Election.

In the Maths department, some of our pupils sat a 40 minute paper with close to half a million other children across the country. The test consisted of 25 thought provoking questions aimed at the most able pupils in Years Seven and Eight. Over the past six years we have also entered our most able mathematicians in Year Six to give them experience. About 30 percent of the entrants will receive either Gold, Silver or Bronze certificates with the highest scorers having a chance to qualify for the National Maths Olympiad. The school’s recent history in the event is something to be proud of. We usually receive around 30 certificates and last year we celebrated Matthew Truell’s success on winning a gold medal and finishing amongst the top five young mathematicians in the country.
